By bridging communication and geographical divides, digital technologies have the potential to reduce systemic risks in agriculture by improving access to information and markets. This session will examine mobile weather forecasting in West Africa and the deployment of last-mile solutions for enhancing climate resilience and productivity across the agricultural value chain. Led by Ignitia, this session will introduce participants to their tropical weather forecasting technology, specialized for last-mile users, and its impacts on resilience, productivity, yields, and incomes. In a 2018 evaluation, 70% of farmers used Ignitia’s forecasts to change the timing of planting, application of agrochemicals, and harvesting, as well as to inform the type of seeds sown and amount of agrochemicals applied. In addition to sharing lessons learned, this session will engage participants in an interactive discussion on the demand and impact of highly-accurate weather information and how to design and scale digital technologies for the last-mile user.
